  • SourcemapTM is a collective tool for transparency and sustainability.

It is a online program though which you can calculate the carbon footprint of an item.

I decided to ‘sourcemap’ a pair of “Nike Free 5.0 v4” shoes.

I found the cheapest pair online, but  beyond the monetary cost ($55), there is also an ‘environment cost’  in this purchase.  The environment cost in CO2 comes in three parts: the material composing of the shoe itself, the shipping from the manufacturing plant to the distributor warehouse, and the shipping for the warehouse to consumer (me).

Carbon footprint below calculated through sourcemap.org

Materials of the shoe: 4.78 kg CO2

shipping from China to San Diego warehouse: 0.01 kg CO2

shipping from warehouse to Cambridge MA: 0.02 kg CO2
